Barkley Cup Championship Series Preview: Powerhouse Vikings Meet Surging Jr Bears

OTTAWA, ON – The stage is set for the 2026 Barkley Cup Championship Series, as the Casselman Vikings and Smiths Falls Jr Bears prepare to battle in a best-of-seven showdown with a championship on the line beginning tonight.

It’s a classic matchup, proven powerhouse vs. fearless underdog, with two communities ready to rally behind their teams.

Casselman: A Dynasty Looking for Another Chapter

From a tight-knit Franco-Ontarian community just east of Ottawa, the Casselman Vikings have built one of the most dominant programs in EOJHL history, and this season has been no exception.

The Vikings stormed through the regular season with a 38-5-0-1 record, capturing both the regular season title and Martin Division crown. They carried that momentum into the playoffs, posting an 8-1-0-0 record, dispatching the Winchester Hawks in four games before eliminating the Ottawa Junior Canadians in five.

Casselman’s identity is clear: fast, structured, and relentless.

And history is firmly on their side.

The Vikings have been crowned league champions on eight occasions, capturing the D. Arnold Carson Trophy in 2012, 2014, and 2015, before beginning their Barkley Cup era with titles in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2024.

They’ve also had the edge in this matchup, defeating Smiths Falls 4-0 and 6-2 during the regular season.

Now, they sit four wins away from adding yet another championship, and further cementing one of the greatest dynasties in EOJHL history.

Smiths Falls: A Rideau River Run to Remember

If Casselman represents consistency, Smiths Falls embodies momentum.

A historic hockey town along the Rideau Canal, Smiths Falls has seen its Jr Bears grow into something special since joining the league in 2022-23 — and this spring, they’ve arrived.

After a 21-18-4-1 regular season, the Jr Bears flipped a switch when it mattered most.

They enter the championship series with an 8-0-2 playoff record, undefeated in regulation, after taking down Richmond in six games and then sweeping Renfrew in dominant fashion.

This is a team playing with confidence, belief, and nothing to lose.

In just their fourth season, the Jr Bears have never missed the playoffs, but this marks their biggest moment yet, a chance to capture their first Barkley Cup and put Smiths Falls firmly on the EOJHL junior hockey map once again.

The Matchup: Experience vs. Belief

On paper, Casselman holds the advantage, deeper experience, championship pedigree, and regular season dominance.

But playoff hockey rarely follows the script.

Smiths Falls has built its run on resilience and timely performances, proving they can rise to the occasion against anyone.

This series will come down to a simple question:

Can the Vikings’ championship DNA overpower the Jr Bears’ unstoppable momentum?

We are about to find out.
