Ottawa, ON – The Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League (EOJHL) is proud to unveil the newly designed Barkley Cup, the League’s championship trophy awarded annually to the EOJHL playoff champion.
The Barkley Cup has served as the League’s championship trophy for the past decade, replacing the D. Arnold Carson Memorial Trophy in 2016. As the EOJHL prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary season in 2026-27, the League felt the milestone provided the perfect opportunity to give its championship trophy a new look while recognizing the history behind its name.
Named in honour of longtime EOJHL Commissioner Dwaine Barkley, the newly designed trophy was created with the intention of becoming a lasting symbol of the League and the accomplishment of winning an EOJHL championship.
“We wanted to create a legacy trophy that properly honours our longest-serving Commissioner, Dwaine Barkley, while also celebrating the 60th season of the EOJHL,” said EOJHL Commissioner Marc Franche. “Winning a league championship is the ultimate achievement for our players, coaches and organizations, and we wanted the Barkley Cup to reflect the history and significance that comes with becoming an EOJHL champion.”
The redesigned Barkley Cup features a traditional championship cup atop a multi-tiered base, providing space to recognize the clubs that have captured EOJHL championships throughout the League’s history. It connects generations of champions while providing room for the names of future winners to be added for years to come.
The unveiling comes as the EOJHL prepares for a milestone season featuring 14 member clubs across Eastern Ontario. Since its beginnings in 1966, the League has played an important role in the junior hockey landscape, providing players with an opportunity to develop, compete for championships and advance to higher levels of the game.
Today, the EOJHL continues that tradition with organizations throughout the region and a commitment to competitive junior hockey, player development and strong community-based programs.
The road to becoming the first team to raise the newly designed Barkley Cup begins when the EOJHL’s 60th anniversary season opens on September 15th when the Ottawa Junior Canadians play host to the Richmond Royals.
