Morning Recap | Casselman and Ottawa West pick up wins on Thursday night

Ottawa, Ontario – There were two games on Halloween night in CCHL Tier 2. The Carleton Place Jr Canadians traveled to the Jr Brisson Complex to play the Casselman Vikings in a tight matchup and Ottawa West were up against the Athens Aeros.

Ottawa West 4, Athens 0

Nicholai Ponomarev collects his first career CCHL2 goal and his first career game winner back in the first period. He started the season by tallying five assists in the first 12 games before scoring his first goal. Noah Haymes scores twice and Jack Haymes added three assists for the second consecutive game.

Sean Kearns also got on the scoresheet with 1 G / 1 A. He is also the 10th player out of all CCHL Tier 2 players to hit 10 goals this season. Athens hasn’t scored a goal in the last three games and have been held scoreless for 172:53 in their last four games.

William McEvoy also made 18 saves for his second shutout with the Golden Knights. He now leads the league with a 1.81 GAA. On the other end, Matthew Maas was terrific between the pipes for Athens and made 34 saves. Ottawa West outshot Athens 38-18.

Casselman 3, Carleton Place 1

This was the game to watch on Thursday night. It was two out of three top teams in the league. Casselman was able to prevail and win this game with Alex Charlebois scoring the game winner with 4:12 to play in regulation.

Mathieu Talbot also collected his third two goal game of his CCHL2 career. He also sets a career high in goals in a season with 12. Last year, he tallied 11 goals in 43 games. Jayden Boyer had the only goal for Carleton Place coming on the power play.

The Canadians snap a two game winning streak while Casselman’s win streak is at two games. These teams won’t face each other until February 15th at the Carleton Place Arena.
