Ottawa, ON – Sunday action in the EOJHL featured two strong home-ice performances. Richmond secured its fifth win of the season with a gritty victory over Winchester, while Smiths Falls used a third-period surge to earn a big road win in Athens.
Richmond 5, Winchester 3
The Richmond Royals came out firing and never trailed as they took down the Winchester Hawks 5–3 on home ice.
Tyson MacCoubrey opened the scoring less than five minutes into the game and added another tally in the second as part of a strong two-goal performance. Ethan Fleming also found the back of the net twice, including a late empty-netter to seal the deal and added some much-needed insurance after Winchester made a hard push.
Vincent Anderson, Peter Harps, and Daniel McDowell each struck for the Hawks, who narrowed the deficit to one midway through the third period. But Richmond stayed composed and shut things down defensively in the final minutes.
Calix Rivard was steady in goal, stopping 29 shots for the win, while Jimmy Boyd made 33 saves for Winchester. Richmond improves to 5-3-0-0, while Winchester falls to 2-6-0-0.
Smiths Falls 4, Athens 1
In Athens, the Smiths Falls Jr. Bears rallied after a scoreless first period, scoring four unanswered goals to knock off the Aeros 4–1.
After Cameron Kelly gave Athens the early second-period lead, Smiths Falls responded with authority. Caleb Bourne tied the game on the power play, setting the stage for a dominant third period.
Andrew Hopley scored just over a minute into the final frame to put the Bears ahead, followed by insurance tallies from Brody Nielissen and Lincoln Chalmers to close out the win.
Goaltender Dean Spry was excellent, turning away 38 shots to backstop Smiths Falls to victory. Marshall Greig made 34 saves in a strong effort for Athens.
With the win, Smiths Falls improves to 4-5-0-0, while Athens drops to 3-3-4-0.
