PROSPECT REPORT: DECEMBER

By: Dante De Caria

Ottawa, Ontario – With the New Year underway – we take a look back at some of the top preforming rookies of December.

Here is an updated list ’01 and ’02 players playing in the CCHL Tier 2 that could make the jump to the CCHL Tier 1 next season.

November Prospect Report: https://www.thecchl2.ca/cchl2-prospect-report-november

#1: ’01 F Artyom Shiman (Whitewater Kings)

Shiman, 17, moves to number one after he won the December Rookie of the Month, totaling 16 points (6G / 10A) in just seven games. He is a very skilled forward with slick hands and size – which makes him a force in the attacking zone. Shiman has been called up to play five games with the Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL) this season. He leads all CCHL2 rookies in goals (23) and ranks second among them in points (40).

#2: ’01 F Thomas Freel (Ottawa Jr. Canadians)

Freel, 17, checks in at number two after scoring three goals and four assists in seven games last month. The Ottawa Jr. Senators prospect is a lock for their roster next season and currently leads all rookies in points (43), assists (27) and power-play goals (8) this season. He is a two-way forward that has very strong Hockey IQ and speed.

#3: ’02 G Owen Bennett (Carleton Place Jr. Canadians)

Bennett, 16, went 5-2 last month – slashing 2.79 GAA / .904 SV % with the Carleton Place Jr. Canadians. The Guelph Storm draft pick has made just one appearance with the Carleton Place Jr A Canadians.  He is a big goaltender that is always in position to stop the puck. I’d expect him to either move up to the Tier 1 or Major Junior level next year. The Georgetown, Ontario native is currently 11-7, 2.81 GAA and .897 SV% this season.

#4: ’01 F Justin Jamer (Ottawa West Golden Knights)

Jamer, 17, managed to score two goals and two assists in just three games last month. He remains at number four because he continues to show people that he can play at the CCHL Tier 1 level. Jamer is on the Navan Grads affiliated list and practices with them everyday. His size, strength and speed will play at the next level – weather that’s Jr. A or Major Junior. The Ottawa native has 24 points and 20 games since joining the Golden Knights in early October.

#5: ’01 F  James Lister (Carleton Place Jr. Canadians)

Lister, 17, could easily make the Carleton Place Canadians Jr. A roster next season. He is a 6’4 body that protects the puck very well and is very good along the boards. The second year CCHL2 forward scored three goals and four assists in six games last month. The Kanata, Ontario native has 23 goals and 25 points in 29 games this season.

Coaches Pick: ’01 F Tyler Toomey (Brockville Tikis)

Toomey, 17, was an honourable mention for the Rookie of the Month after netting nine points in nine games. The Hillsburgh, Ontario native is fourth among rookies in points (33) and second in assists (20) this season. He is a fast play making forward that might have a chance at the Brockville Braves roster next season.
